Autism Traits Self-Assessment
What does our assessment involve?

At Abacus Psychology Service, we offer autism assessments for children, young people, and adults.
All our assessments are completed by experienced clinicians and follow the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines, which set the national standards for recognising and diagnosing autism.

1. Screening Assessment
We understand that deciding whether to begin a full autism assessment can feel like a big step.
That’s why we offer a Screening Assessment as a starting point.
The screening helps us to:
-
Understand your concerns and background information
-
Explore whether the pattern of strengths and difficulties may be consistent with autism
-
Consider other possible explanations for what you are noticing
-
Decide together what the next steps should be
This stage usually involves a clinical discussion and screening questionnaires, but it does not include a written report.
It helps you and our team decide whether a full diagnostic assessment would be appropriate.
2. Full Diagnostic Assessment
If screening suggests that autism could be present, we can move on to a full assessment.
This may include:
-
A developmental interview to gather information about early history and current presentation
-
Structured assessments or observations (such as the ADOS-2)
-
School or nursery observations (for children) to understand how the individual interacts and learns in everyday settings
-
Cognitive assessment, where there are concerns about learning, attention, or intellectual development (at additional cost)
-
Questionnaires completed by family members, teachers, or employers (where relevant)
-
Input from experienced psychological team including psychologists, speech and language therapist and/or occupational therapist, where appropriate.
At the end of the assessment, you will receive clear feedback and a comprehensive written report summarising the findings, diagnosis (if appropriate), and tailored recommendations for support.
