Cognitive Behavioural Therapy — CBT — is one of the most extensively researched psychological therapies in the world. It is recommended by NICE for a wide range of conditions including anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and phobias. CBT works by helping you identify and change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour that are maintaining your difficulties.
Unlike some other forms of therapy, CBT is structured, goal-focused, and typically time-limited. Sessions involve a combination of talking, reflection, and practical exercises — many of which you will practise between sessions. This active approach is one of the reasons CBT produces lasting change.
At Abacus, CBT is delivered by accredited therapists for adults, young people, and children. We also offer Trauma-Focused CBT for those who have experienced traumatic events.

Here is what a course of CBT typically involves:
1.
Assessment session
Your therapist will assess your difficulties, understand your goals for therapy, and explain how CBT works. Together you will agree a treatment plan.
2
Psychoeducation
Early sessions focus on helping you understand the CBT model — how thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and behaviours connect and influence each other in your specific situation.
3
Skills and strategies
Working through specific CBT techniques tailored to your presentation — for example thought records, behavioural experiments, graded exposure, or problem-solving.
