Occupational Therapy and Sensory Assessment
Helping children make sense of their world
What is Sensory Integration?
Sensory Processing is the way our brains take in, process, and respond to information from the senses — touch, movement, sound, sight, taste, and more. When this system works smoothly, children can focus, learn, and engage
confidently. But for some children, sensory information can feel confusing or overwhelming — leading to difficulties with attention, behaviour, coordination, or emotional regulation.

Our Sensory Assessment helps identify how your child’s sensory processing might be affecting their learning, play, and wellbeing.

Why an Assessment May Help

You might notice that a child:
-
Is overly sensitive to sounds, touch, or movement
-
Seeks out movement constantly — running, spinning, climbing
-
Avoids certain textures or clothing
-
Struggles with coordination or handwriting
-
Appears inattentive, restless, or anxious in busy environments
-
Has strong emotional reactions to changes or sensory overload
A Sensory Integration Assessment can uncover the why behind these behaviours — providing clarity and help to tailor strategies in accordance with you child’s specific needs.

What the Assessment Involves
Our Occupational Therapist will complete:
1. Parent, Carer, Teacher Consultation – gathering a full picture of the child’s everyday experiences.
2. Clinical Observation and Standardised Testing – using recognised Sensory Processing tool helps to explore areas of
difficulty and observation helps the OT to understand the issue specifically in relation to the child. Observations in real world environments are helpful to see what aspect of the environment are supporting or challenging the child.
3. School or Home Observation – where relevant, to understand real-world challenges and strengths.
4. Comprehensive Report and Recommendations – clear, practical guidance for parents, teachers, and support staff.
Reports outline how sensory needs impact learning and participation — and include tailored strategies, equipment suggestions, and next-step therapy recommendations.
